Our team is led by Ryan Smith, a registered architect with over 20 years of experience in the industry. We believe in collaborating closely with our clients to understand their unique vision and needs, and then bringing that vision to life through innovative design solutions. FIRM HISTORY

Smith Architects, inc. is a full service architectural firm based in Flagstaff, AZ. Since the late 1980's we have been providing Northern Arizona with outstanding architectural services. The firm was originally founded as Josh Barclay and Associates, Ltd. In 2001, Ryan Smith joined the team and helped create the partnership of Barclay-Smith Architects, Inc. Josh retired in 2005 and Ryan has forged ahead and changed the firm identity to Smith Architects, inc. Our work represents our commitment to providing the professional service, creative design solutions, and sustainable architecture that our clients expect and deserve.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Smith Architects approaches every project as a new opportunity to surpass expectations, incorporate new technologies and create functional, comfortable, and stimulating places. As responsible design professionals we are committed through sound design practices to incorporate environmentally conscious design strategies into each and every one of our projects. Our staff includes LEED Accredited Professionals who are knowledgeable and dedicated to producing high quality and energy efficient working and living spaces that respond to the unique climate of Northern Arizona. At the beginning stages of each project we employ a common sense approach to explore optimum building siting, desirable solar orientation, opportunities for passive ventilation, appropriate fenestration, efficient HVAC systems, and the utilization of locally available building materials.

RYAN SMITH, Architect, NCARB, LEED AP
Principal/President

Ryan Smith is principal and president of Smith Architects, inc., Ryan’s strengths include design, technical expertise, project management and construction administration, especially in the commercial architectural arena. He has been responsible for many commercial projects throughout the Northern Arizona region including the 20,000 s.f facility for the Flagstaff Family YMCA, and the historic rehabilitation of the JD Halstead Lumber Building to become the new home of the Lumberyard Brewing Co. His professional experience in Arizona and Seattle, WA, includes all types of public and private work projects that focus on the commercial, retail, institutional, educational, governmental, and multi-family/hospitality architectural services. As principal of his own firm, he is responsible for complete oversight of client projects from initial programming and design to the final construction completion and occupancy of the project. During the past 25 years, Smith Architects, inc. has successfully completed over 500 projects totaling over $100 million in construction costs.

TYLER SCANTLEBURY, A.I.T.

Project Manager

As a Project Manager, Tyler guides the designs of Smith Architects projects with thoughtful and dynamic solutions, working with project teams from the earliest conceptual design phases through construction & project closeout. Primarily working in the commercial realm, Tyler holds experience working and ranging from a wide variety of projects including remodels, custom residential, tenant improvements, historic preservation, industrial, multi-family, research & development, office, retail, veterinary facilities, restaurant and hospitality. A Flagstaff native, Tyler has over 12 yrs experience in the construction/ design industry. Following receipt of his AAS Degree in Architectural Design Technology, Tyler worked in the General Contracting arena before joining Smith in 2014 and is currently taking the ARE 5.0 exams to become a licensed professional.

Kyle Childers, NCARB, A.I.T.
Project Manager

Kyle began working for Smith Architects inc. in 2015. He brings a strong passion for residential design to the table, with nearly 20 years of professional design and drafting experience, ranging from modular tiny home units to multi-million dollar custom residences. He enjoys exploring new design ideas, while keeping traditional architectural values alive and thriving in Flagstaff and the surrounding area. As a project manager for Smith Architects inc., his responsibilities include working closely with the client to understand their needs and vision, creating detailed designs and construction drawings, and coordinating with engineering and contracting professionals through the final completion of each unique project. Kyle has recently completed the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), and is actively pursuing his goal in becoming a Registered Architect in Arizona.
